Breaking Down the Hidden Costs of Contracting
When choosing between an ABN and a PAYG offer, the headline daily rate for a contractor often looks much higher than the employee's salary. However, a contractor typically needs to earn at least 25% to 30% more than an employee to be financially equal.
As an employee, you are entitled to 4 weeks of paid annual leave, 2 weeks of paid personal/sick leave, and approximately 11 public holidays. As a contractor, every day you don't work is a day you don't get paid. Our calculator accounts for this by allowing you to set the "Weeks Worked per Year".
The Superannuation Gap
Employers must pay a Super Guarantee (12.0% in 2026-27) on top of an employee's base salary. As a contractor, you must contribute to super yourself from your invoice amount.
Tax Deductibility
While contractors take on more risk, they can also claim a much wider range of business expenses—like home office, equipment, and insurance—which can lower their taxable income significantly.
